WP-1 Attosecond XUV-IR spectroscopy

Coordinators A. L’Huillier LUND // T. Metzger TRUMPF (Start Month 4- End Month 48)

Introduction: The aim of WP1 is to characterize attosecond and femtosecond electronic processes and nuclear dynamics occurring in molecules and clusters. To achieve this goal, high-repetition rate table-top HHG sources will be developed by the academic and industrial partners of the network exploiting established and novel laser technologies. Using these systems, we will conduct XUV-IR pump-probe experiments implementing spectroscopy techniques based on the measurement of charged particles (photoelectron and photoion angular distributions) and photons (absorption spectroscopy).

WP-2 Non-linear XUV spectroscopy

Coordinators M. Vrakking MBI // X. Chen AMPL (Start Month 4- End Month 48)

Introduction: WP2 will focus on the investigation of molecular and cluster dynamics through the use of intense ultrashort XUV pulses generated by FELs or HHG. While intense XUV pulses have now been used in FEL experiments for a few years, thanks to recent results in the generation of intense IR driving pulses, it now seems extremely realistic that reproducible intense isolated attosecond pulses generated by field-controlled (i.e. CEP stable) driving pulses will be available for use in XUV pump-XUV probe experiments within the next few years. This achievement will represent a major breakthrough in attosecond science and it will require close joint collaborations between the industrial and academic partners of the network. In this context, nonlinear attosecond experiments and attosecond XUV-IR studies will strongly benefit from the investigations of molecules and clusters exposed to high XUV intensities that can be carried out in the femtosecond domain at FELs. While established attosecond XUV-IR pump-probe techniques can be extended to large systems, new, challenging, attosecond XUV-XUV experiments will have to be necessarily restricted to small, easy-to-prepare systems.

WP-3 HHG and ultrafast electron imaging

Coordinators P. Salières CEA // A. Assion FEMTO (Start Month 4- End Month 48)

Introduction: The common thread in WP3 is the application of ultrashort (attosecond and femtosecond) electron wave-packets to image multi-electron and nuclear dynamics occurring in molecules. The wave packets will be created either by (1) strong field IR photoionization or by (2) single photon absorption of an XUV pulse. In case (1), the interaction of the parent ion with the recolliding electron wave packet driven by the IR field can lead to the emission of photons (recombination and high harmonic generation, HHG) or to the bouncing back of the electrons (rescattering) in the presence of the laser field (hereafter referred to as laser-induced electron diffraction LIED). In both HHG and LIED, the products of the recollision process contain information about the electron and nuclear dynamics that occurred after the ionization event. In case (2), the diffraction of photoelectrons can be used to image structural changes. In both cases, adiabatic and nonadiabatic alignment and orientation techniques, based on the use of nanosecond and femtoseconds IR pulses, respectively, will be implemented to fix the molecular frame with respect to the polarization direction of the incident laser pulse. The success of these experiments will strongly depends on the development of complementary technologies consisting in long-wavelength CEP-stabilized driving lasers, systems for the generation of dense, cold molecular beams, and imaging detectors for the measurement of photoelectron and photoion angular distributions. WP 3.1 will focus on the imaging of attosecond multi-electron dynamics using XUV photons generated by HHG, while in WP 3.2 the unique characteristics of ultrashort, electron wave-packets of short wavelength will be used to image structural changes on the femtosecond timescale.

WP-4 Training

Coordinators J. Mauritsson LUND // G. Sansone FREIB (Start Month 4- End Month 48)

Early career training should aim at combining excellent scientific preparation, entrepreneurship attitude and mentality, and communication, interpersonal and management skills. These characteristics will be fundamental for future scientists who are expected to raise awareness of society about the importance of research, and for future private sector leaders, who are expected to translate scientific research to the market and thus make innovation available to the society. In this context, the development, application and widespread use of key enabling technologies (such as Photonics) will require strong synergy and collaboration among the academia (for the development of new approaches and materials), the industrial sector (for the industrial implementation and commercialization of innovative products), and outreach centres (for the education of society on the importance of these new emerging technologies). The main training objective of the network, therefore, is to provide the ESRs with the expertise, skills and experiences required for the development of new career perspectives in academia, industry, and in education. This goal will be achieved by:

(1) Exposing the ESRs to the interdisciplinary scientific expertise (in photonics, molecular physics, and theory) available throughout the network through the use of secondments and common training opportunities,

(2) Involving institutions focused on complementary aspects of science and technology, including: pure research (research centers and universities), industrial and commercial applications (industrial partners), outreach (museum MUST) and general education (secondary schools), and,

(3) Offering well-designed activities with specific goals to provide, high-quality training in research, innovation management and entrepreneurship, and communication skills
